My Fabulous New Job!

I would have to say the hardest part about being a stay at home mom is keeping up my employable skills – reasoning that most employers don’t care that I have mastered the art of swaddling, know all the words to “Hush Little Baby” and have taught my little guy to strike a Zoolander pose (which actually has me falling off my chair laughing each time).

So Mike and I decided that I should definitely look into a part time job, both to keep my brain active and to supplement my Christmas shopping :) But what to do? Certainly not anywhere near the woods of my previous career (do YOU see me as a Financial Services Business Analyst?) Ha, I think not. Being off for almost two years has definitely convinced me I need a change. So what then? Something that I love doing… that will excite me… that will keep me motivated…. that I enjoy.

So it’s no surprise that when PTPA posted for a Social Media Mom, I jumped at the opportunity to work with them. And I got the job!

Starting today, I will be PTPA’s social media representative on their blog, Twitter and Facebook. I’ll be keeping all their readers in the loop about great contest announcements, award winning products, parenting tips and, of course, hot deals!

What does this mean for Listen to Lena! readers? Well, with respect to my blog, it’s business as usual; I’m not going anywhere. But, for the parents who take the time to stop by, you’re in for a treat – I’ll have the inside scoop on PTPA’s contests, will be partnering with many of the award winning products to bring fab giveaways to my blog, and will have up-to-the minute info about the hottest new brands!

So if you can’t get enough of the parenting deals here, be sure to follow my updates by becoming a fan of PTPA on Facebook, following my updates on Twitter, and reading my posts on the PTPA blog! And here’s the first great contest for ya – when PTPA reaches 500 fans on Facebook, they’ll randomly draw for a $100 gift card from GAP!

I’ll be all over cyberspace for PTPA, and would love to run into some L2L readers on different social platforms. (In case you’re wondering, this is a work from home position, so I’m now a stay at home mom/blogging guru/Social Media Mom/happy mommy.)

Thanks, as always, for stopping by – and hope to see more of ya’ll soon!

E.L.F. Cosmetics: 70% off All Minerals

I normally don’t post about e.l.f. promos (they tend to have one EVERY DAY), but thought this would be a good one for those interested in their Minerals line.

Today only, it’s Cyber Monday at e.l.f., where you’ll receive 70% off cosmetics from their Minerals line with coupon code EHCMM. There is a maximum discount of $100, and remember, you will have to pay taxes and duty once it arrives.

The cost of an eyeshadow in the Minerals line is $3, while most lipsticks run at $5. These definitely aren’t Bare Escentuals prices! A great deal if you’re purchasing a bunch of items, or if you’re shopping with friends.

Wha’t's so hot about e.l.f. cosmetics?

We at e.l.f. believe that innovative technology, quality ingredients and superb delivery systems should not be limited to prestige retailers. Every woman should have the opportunity to participate in innovation, without sacrificing her budget.

Our cosmetics are designed to improve and accentuate the individual, not hide her away. Launched in 2004 and guided by celebrity and beauty professional Scott-Vincent Borba, e.l.f. is a revolutionary new beauty company, able to provide a line of cosmetics that moisturize, hydrate, and enliven your complexion without taxing your budget.

We are often asked how we are able to provide our customers with such wonderful products, many for as little as $1. By developing quality cosmetics and the highest standard of service, but using the Internet for branding rather than higher-priced advertising media; by sourcing the best ingredients at competitive prices; and by prioritizing our products, rather than their packaging, e.l.f. always provides you with quality and value.

e.l.f. has been a revolution in the beauty industry, turning heads away from more expensive brands with its unique approach. These values extend to recently launched new lines of bath products and fine mineral make-up.

Life Brand Face/Hair Masks Just $0.25

Thanks to a tip on Smart Canucks, I kept my peepers open as I breezed into Shoppers Drug Mart last night – and can confirm that there’s a pretty sweet deal going on right now on single-sized Life Brand Face/Hair masks – only $0.25 each! These are the masks you regularly see in small packets by the face care counter. Word on the street is that they’re being cleared out to make way for the BALEA brand of products. Regularly $1.69 – $1.99, they had a ton of varieties available:

Mandarin/Grapefruit Defrizzing Hair Mask
Orange Oil Vitamin E Warming Face Mask
Grapefruit Oil Vitamin E Warming Face Mask
Anit Aging Collagen w/ Green Tea Face Mask
Relaxing Foot Soak w/ Grapefruit Oil
Refreshing Leg Gel w/ Cherry Extract
Detoxifying Lotus Flower/Ginsing Face Mask
Anti Aging Pore Refining Mask w/ Siberian Ginsing
Anti Aging Micro Dermabrasion Duo w/ Alpha Hydroxy

I can think of several great uses for these masks… a quick way to freshen up your skin, a nice way to pamper yourself while travelling, and my favourite – grab a bunch of them, wrap them up in a gift box or basket, and donate them to a women’s shelter. Just don’t get hooked on them, because they’ll be off the shelves before you can say “Life Brand!”

The photo is courtesy of JustBlushing.net, who posted a review of the masks on her site. Read the full review here.

RW&CO: $25 off Purchases of $85

If you’ve got a working gal (or guy) on your shopping list this year, be sure to stop by RW&CO before December 5th: they’ll take $25 off purchases of $85 or more. If you spend exactly $85, that works out to a savings of 30%!

Just one of the things I miss about going in to the office is getting decked out in RW sweaters and skirts – nothing says “cubicle-dweller” like a smart outfit!

(I still have all the skirts neatly folded and packed away; after so many good times, I simply couldn’t part with them. Sappy, I know.)

See in-store for full offer details; not valid on the purchase of gift cards.

Home Outfitters: 20% off Everything this Sunday!

Thanks to Vanda for passing along the savings!

This Sunday, November 29th, you can save 20% on everything at Home Outfitters when you use your HBC Mastercard or Credit Card! (With other forms of payment, you’ll receive 10% off your entire purchase). You must bring the invitation with you (simply click and print the picture on the left) to enjoy the savings. Note the shopping hours are between 6pm and 9pm. The ad promises more great deals in store, and don’t forget, you’ll receive a $20 money card when you spend $50!

H&M: 50% off All Outerwear

If you’re ill-prepared for winter (which will surely be on it’s way… any day now…) be sure to stop by H&M before Sunday, November 29th – you’ll find all outerwear 50% off!

Pea coats. Winter trenches. Swing coats. Military jackets. All 50% off. Oh my!

Last year I bought a pretty hot coat from Mike from H&M – I pretty much had to cut the tag off so he would wear it. Nevertheless, it’s a military style and completely fab. And I paid full price for it. Bah.

The Body Shop: 3 items for $30

Now THIS is a good deal.

Today only – Friday, November 27th – you can grab ANY three items over $10 for only $30! For example, you can purchase a $20 Body Butter, a $15 Face Mask and a $13 lip gloss – all for $30! It doesn’t matter which combination of products you choose, but note that gift baskets and gift cards are not included in this promo.

And, if you’ve got a Love Your Body card, you can still grab an extra 10% off! That’s 3 items for $27!

My picks? Grab the Spa Wisdom Africa Spa Salt Scrub ($28.00), a Love Etc… Eau de Parfum ($29.50) and a Vitamin E Body Butter ($20.00). All for $30!

HOT! HOT! HOT!

Automatic Dispenser Just $31.50

I had been looking for an automatic dispenser for some time, for a variety of reasons:

1) I wanted a cool soap dispenser to match my cool powder room
2) I needed a much easier way to apply the perfect amount of hand lotion – I’ve been known to overindulge and then do the arm-rubbing thing to get rid of the excess
3) I thought it would be a nice item to have at the office for Mike, so he could enjoy a hands-free way to apply sanitizer

Of course, everywhere I looked, I found them for at least $50-60 (even my trusted Bed, Bath and Beyond retails one for $49.99. Boo)

So I had all but given up my quest to find an automatic friend when I happened to read a review by Faces by Farah this morning. (Before I go further, Farah doesn’t simply review soap dispensers. She also happens to be a kick-ass makeup artist in the Toronto area. Check out her blog.)

She was able to find one from AgeComfort.com for just $35.00, who offer FREE shipping over $100 (or $8 flat under $100), PLUS until this Sunday, November 29th, you can grab 10% off any product with coupon code blackfriday09. Woot! Woot! An automatic soap dispenser for just $31.50!

Here’s what Farah had to say:

What I liked:

- The cost!
- The fact that it was SO easy to set up and use
- That you can control the amount of lotion/soap/sanitizer dispensed
- The shipping speed
- The company’s fast and friendly customer service

What I disliked:

- That you need a screwdriver to open the battery compartment at the bottom

Conclusion: This product was exactly what I had been looking for and although their website is geared mostly to the older generation they had the best prices on this and other items I ordered for my parents.

I got it at a great price and the fact that it works so well really will make moisturizing on those lazy days just that much easier!

Moms Fight the Flu

I want you to think about this one for a second.

You’re in line at Starbucks, waiting for your latte. The person in front of you (say, male, mid-thirties, unshaven but generally clean appearance) starts to cough viciously. I’m talking about a full on, hack attack. He turns to the side, thereby putting you straight in the line of fire. You can almost see the droplets of saliva shooting out of his throat. What do you do?

Quite likely, you think:

2008: Eww. Don’t get me sick, buddy. I’d better hold my breath and look away.

2009: Oh crap. Oh no. Please don’t have H1N1. Oh damn, what should I do? Should I leave? Should I go wash my hands – would that help? What the heck, buddy! You shouldn’t be leaving the house if you have a cough. Oh boy. I think I feel a headache coming on. Yup, my throat is definitely sore. The world is spinning! What should I do – oh, thanks, I’ve got the gingerbread latte. See you tomorrow.

My point is, whether you want to admit it or not, everyone has H1N1 on their mind (unless you’re one of the unlucky – lucky? – few who already succumbed to the illness, and now have a theoretical promise of immunity). Because truly, even if you’ve taken the vaccine, I’m sure you’d still have a mild panic attack if an apparently sick individual was launching spit on your face (sorry, I know, bad mental picture).

Now I’m not here to tell you whether or not you should take the shot. That, my friends, is one debate I don’t want to take on. But I have joined a blog tour campaign with Mom Central, which aims to inform parents about the latest information on H1N1 and what they can do to keep their children safe.

Specifically, the Ontario Ministry of Health is your one-stop shop for up to the minute information on vaccination clinics, tips for protecting yourself and family, and assessment tools to help diagnose if your child has the flu.

LOVE that they’re able to give you approximate wait times at the vaccination clinics, including return tickets, so that you can plan your day (which doesn’t involve lining up for 6 hours). And if you haven’t already, do take a look at the H1N1 virus and vaccine info, what to do if you have symptoms, and school information.

Here are some quick tips to stay healthy:

- Good hand hygiene is the best way to prevent the spread of all flu viruses. Wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly and often.
- Keep an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (gel or wipes) handy at work, home and in your car. It needs to be at least 60% alcohol to be effective.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze and throw the tissue out.
- Cough into your upper sleeve if you don’t have a tissue.
- Avoid large crowds of people where viruses can spread easily. Stay home when you are sick.
- Keep common surfaces and items clean and disinfected.

And don’t forget to call TeleHealth Ontario if you’ve got questions and can’t get through to your doctor – I have them on speed dial! (1-866-797-0000)

So here’s my wish for you – a happy, HEALTHY holiday season!

I wrote this post while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central and received a Mom Central gift pack to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Pumpkin Pie Squares

A tribute to our American neighbours, who are celebrating Thanksgiving this weekend!

Here’s an easy, delicious recipe for those who want the goodness of pumpkin pie without all the fuss. Prep time is only about 15 minutes, and you’ll drool as the scent of pumpkin and spices fills your kitchen. Yum.

This makes a great treat all year round, but for some reason, I only remember to make pumpkin goodies from Halloween to Christmas!

INGREDIENTS

1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup rolled oats
2 eggs
3/4 cup white sugar
1 (15 ounce) can pumpkin puree
1 (12 fluid ounce) can evaporated milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a medium bowl, cream together butter and brown sugar. Mix in flour. Fold in oats. Press into an 8×8-inch baking dish. Bake in preheated oven 10-15 minutes, until set.

In a large bowl, beat eggs with white sugar. Beat in pumpkin and evaporated milk. Mix in salt, cinnamon, ginger and cloves. Pour over baked crust.

Bake in preheated oven 20 minutes, until set. Let cool before cutting into squares. Serves 12.

YM Inc Friends & Family: Save 35%

The group includes Stitches, Urban Planet, Sirens, LA Express, Siblings, Bluenotes, Mariposa, Marisa and Suzy Shier. Great event if you’ve got tweens on your list this year!

You must present an invite; click here to print your invitation.

GAP: Buy One, Get One 60% off Sweaters

Thanks to Tanya for passing along the savings!

Ah, just in time for the colder weather – GAP is having a fabulous sale on sweaters and fleece! Mens and womens sweaters are Buy One, Get One 60% off, while GapKids and babyGap are offering Buy One, Get One 60% off cozy fleece. Can you say Christmas shopping?

For some reason, Vancouver stores are excluded from this sale – perhaps it’s not that cold in BC? Or maybe they’re having their own super-excellent sale. Regardless, I hate exemptions… so uncool.

This sale runs for three days only (Nov 25th thru 27th), so hurry in! I’m sure selection will dwindle very quickly.
