Safe Sizer Choking Prevention Plate… Contest! CLOSED
This past Monday, when PTPA announced their Summer 09 Winners, I briefly mentioned my favourable experience with the Safe Sazer Choking Prevention Plate by Midwest Monkeys.
Since I absolutely loved the design of the plate, and appreciate the important safety measurement that is incorporated, I wanted to take the time to let ya’ll know about the product in detail. I firmly believe that every household, with children under 4, should have at least one on hand.
Simply put, the Safe Sizer Choking Prevention Plate is a colourful child’s plate with a unique safety feature to help reduce the risk of children choking on food. It incorporates a ½ inch diameter ring molded into the plate. The ½ inch size comes from the FDA’s recommendation that children under 4 years not be fed any round, firm foods unless they are cut up into pieces smaller than ½ inch in any direction.
I was sooo guilty of over-estimating. Before using the plate, I had absolutely no idea that the portions I was feeding Ryder Roonie were actually too large (he happily opens wide for just about anything he can pick up between his fingers). The product definitely helped me gauge how large the morsels should be to prevent choking, and gave me peace of mind when I handed the feeding duties off to hubby, who, before the plate, was really liberal in his portion sizes (I’m talking boulders compared to what should have been pebbles).
And the design – cute, cute, cute! I received the plate with an outer space theme, which depicted lil’ astronauts and aliens (aww). Also available are “under the sea” and “jungle” scenes. The plate was light but sturdy, and of course, did not have any sharp edges to worry about. In the beginning, Ryder Roonie was a fairly obsessed with sticking his finger in the Safe Sizer, but thankfully lost interest after a few days :)
Retailing for $5-6 US ($6-7 CDN), the plate is reasonably priced – for it’s peace of mind component; a bargain. You may order the plate online from BabyAge or The Baby’s Gallerie. Consumers can also purchase directly from the website (Canadian orders please contact Sales for a quote on shipping costs).
Or… you can just WIN one on Listen to Lena!

Please enter me in the contest:)) Now that I help babysit my nephew, I am paranoid about portion servings…this looks like it would keep him interested in the food (thanks to the bright designs on the plate) and also give me and his grandmother some peace of mind! :)
I am loving the bright designs of the plates! I'm very curious about how big too big really is (I am guessing pretty small. Please enter me in the contest.
I'm sure that I have given my nephew food that is too big, and I know that my husband has! I would love to get one of these plates, and another for my sister. It's great that the plate comes in cute designs.
Hi LenaPlease enter me into your draw. I have two girls age 5 years and 13 months, and I have a huge fear of them choking on food (even though it has never happened and I am trained in infant cpr.) I cut up all their food (even the 5 year olds) As you mentioned in your article it is easy to over estimate the size of the food. I also think this will be a great resource for my baby sitter, parents and inlaws who may be feeding my children.Ps just discovered yoru site and love it.
Please enter me in the draw! I babysit for my nephew a lot, and I'm always paranoid about feeding him. I think the plates are really cute, and would love to keep one at my house for when he comes over. Thank you!
With two girls aged 2 and 9 months, I'm always worried about choking. I think this is a great invention, I'm only surprised that a Mom didn't think of this earlier. Please enter me in the contest.
Please enter me in the contest, these plates are so awesome, and so cute!
Please enter me in your contest. When our son was a baby (7 years ago), I was always worried about the size of the food we were giving him. Now our 10 month old daughter is beginning to eat diced foods and again the worry is there, especially after seeing the sizer on these plates. This is an amazing invention and one that every household with kids should have.
Yes, I am writing to enter the contest, but I am also a big fan of child safety. I'm constantly telling people to cut food lengthwise and small and no hard foods for kids…espeically those 4 & under…popcorn, baby carrots, hard candy are definately a no no for young'uns…even peanut butter can be a problem…put it on toast with a bit of butter first. I also agree with you that we will all be shocked at how small we really have to go. This plate sure takes the guesswork out!!
Hey Lena! Please enter me in this contest also!! I am a new mom (daughter is 10 weeks old) and I had absolutely no idea that food had to be smaller than 1/2 inch!! We're strictly breastfeeding for now, so thank goodness nothing went wrong :)Thank you for providing us with this information – I am sure you have prevented many mishaps already!
i would love to win one of these plates. my little guy started solids last month, and although we're still on the mushy stuff, i'm so paranoid about choking. these plates would be a great help to keep his food the right size.thanks for the contest!
This product sounds perfect! Cudos to the inventor(s)! I wish it had been around 18-22 years ago when I had my girls. I have a new grandson (Ethan) and this would be a great thing to have around. It would educate all the aunties and uncles and of course Grandma & Pepere :-)
This sounds like a great product (or fantabulous as you would say, lol).I really can't believe somebody didn't think of it sooner. Please enter me in the contest.
Wow! those plates are so cute. I really like the safe sizing feature, and I'm pretty sure that I overestimate the portion size of my 14 month old's food. I would love to win one.
am i too late to enter?Well either way these plates are genius. I never know what size is chokable, and a choking baby is so scary! Thanks
