A few months ago, just before we began transitioning Ryder Ronnie from a bottle to a sippy cup, I decided to do a little research. Hence, I blocked off an hour in my schedule, grabbed a steaming mug of coffee, and stationed myself in front of the computer. And then I Googled “Best Sippy Cup.”
Well, gosh darn it, I really should have blocked off two hours. Pages and pages of websites danced before my eyes, all with strong recommendations for (and against!) brands, features and styles of sippy cups. There were valves and suction to consider. Ergonomics. Spill-proof features. Travel-friendly. Hard spout vs. soft spout. Liquid flow rate. Removable handles. After over an hour of surfing through the possibilities, I summed up that it was easier to buy a car.
And the real stinger? Every parent seemed to sing the same song – “You have to try out a bunch and just see which one your child takes to. It may mean trying out several brands before you settle on one that is accepted.” Just wonderful. As if it wasn’t confusing enough.
However, after weighing the options (and recommendations), I decided to try out the Nuby brand sippy cups. My research told me that 1) parents seemed to vouch for them the most – far more often than any other brand, 2) they were affordable, and 3) had a built-in valve so there were less parts to clean, and therefore less bacteria and mold growth.
The next day, I ventured out to purchase a few different Nuby cups, just in case Ryder had a preference for style, colour or features. And then, the battle began.
Ryder didn’t want to drink from a sippy cup, he wanted to play with it. Shake it. Turn it upside down. Throw it across the room (twice hitting mommy in the head). I know this is normal behaviour for a child first introduced to this portable, colourful contraption, but Ryder never actually graduated to realizing it wasn’t a toy, even after countless demonstrations on how to hold, sip and drink from it.
Then one day, after weeks of frustration, and a true-blue bottle-sucking freak, I passed him my strawberry smoothie to he could sample it’s deliciousness. He looked at the straw, and then at me, and in one glorious motion, he started drinking from the straw. Bye bye sippy cups!
Since that day, he now drinks from Rubbermaid Litterless Juice Boxes (the ones with the flip-top straw). He knows they’re not toys, doesn’t have to tip them back to enjoy their goodness, and mommy is pleased as punch he’s drinking his water, juice and milk like a champion.
Wondering what I’ll do with all those extra Nuby Sippy Cups?
I’ll have a contest, of course! Below is what’s up for grabs: 2 x No-Spill Twin Handled 1st Cup, 2 x No-Spill Easy Grip Cup, and 1 x No-Spill Flip n’ Sip Cup (approx. retail value $25).

All you have to do is post a comment telling me, as an adult, what you would prefer to sip from a sippy cup. My pick? A Long Island Iced Tea! I’ll draw for a winner next Monday – Good luck!
